Course Descriptions
Old Testament Survey Part 1 – The aim of this course is to acquaint the student with the content, message, and personal application of each OT book, and to study the unity of all the books in the progress of revelation and redemption. Begins with an overview of God’s creation through the events in Esther, the Patriarchs, Israel’s trek to the promised land, David’s reign, Solomon’s Kingdom, the Kingdom of Judah, and the exile.
Old Testament Survey Part 2 – This course is an overview of God’s working from Job to Malachi. Poetry and Prophecy are explored to gain insight into God’s dealings with His people and to relate the prophets' writings to us today.
New Testament Survey – In this course, the central theme is the person of Christ, the Messiah. Divisions are the Synoptic Gospels, the Gospel of John, the Book of Acts, the Pauline Epistles in chronological order, the General Epistles, and the Book of Revelation.
Church of God in Christ History, Doctrine, Polity – This course examines the life, works, and theology of Bishop Charles Harrison Mason. It also explores the origins and ministry of COGIC, including its constitution, amendments, and doctrines.
Church of God in Christ Doctrines and Theology – This course discusses the theological and biblical basis of COGIC doctrine and practice. It will demonstrate why certain doctrines and practices are central to the organization.
Christian and Ministerial Ethics – This course examines the moral dimensions of the Christian ministry and the moral issues facing ministers in their day-to-day work. Attention is given to the minister’s personal, professional, and collegial relationships, as well as to their moral responsibilities. It will address different ethical issues from a biblical and theological perspective. This course will help students establish basic methods and approaches to maintaining high ethical standards in their lives and ministry.
Homiletics – This course will examine techniques, principles, and standard practices in the creation and delivery of sermons. Students will practice delivering sermons with peers and selected jurisdictional leaders and will critique the sermons of fellow students.
Women in Ministry – This course examines the roles that women have played in the history and ministry of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC). It will also examine the lives of key female pioneers and leaders in the Church. Students will study and learn the structure of the COGIC Women’s Department.
Leadership Principles – This course explores biblical and theological understandings of leadership, examining various leadership models within the Bible and contrasting them with contemporary approaches. Its primary focus will be on creating a biblically based leadership philosophy and applying it in Christian ministry and daily life.
Evangelism and Missions – Students will examine some of the key methods that are employed in group evangelism, planning evangelistic revivals, and conducting public witnessing campaigns and outreach programs.
Christian Apologetics for Other Religions and Cults – This two-part study presents a connected and organized overview of major differences between the historic orthodox biblical Christian faith and other views represented in major world religions, cults, and ideologies that are vying for the hearts and minds of people today. This study provides the student with knowledge and information needed to understand their own church beliefs better by comparing key beliefs of religious groups, cults, and occult belief systems. It will help the student learn to discern differences and to witness effectively to people of other faiths.
